December 19, 2014 How Your Nonprofit Can Profit at a Birthday Party

A friend who is turning 60 next month asked me what he could do in celebration of this milestone birthday. He said, “I want to do something special and fun”. I shared with him what I did for my 50th birthday – I had an absolute blast with this idea I got from another friend, Tim Luke.
I’m passing this great idea to generate funds for your nonprofit along to you.
I threw a birthday party for myself and invited lots of friends to a local brewery, Back Forty Beer Co. I requested that guests not bring ME any gifts but instead bring items for the animals at the Humane Society Pet Rescue and Adoption Center. I also posted donation requests on Facebook with a link friends could follow to make a direct donation. To provide a special incentive, I stated that I would match all cash donations. Talk about gutsy! This had everyone talking about “really making me pay” and that they did! I also suggested guests bring much needed supplies for the animals at the shelter (dog and cat food, litter, toys, etc.). I am proud to report that my friends raised $1,000, including some online donations from all over the country. We also received all varieties of supplies. After my match, we raised $2,000!!! Yes, they put MY money where their mouth was!!!
I believe my friend is also going to do this for his birthday and I can’t wait to see how much money his friends can raise.
Encourage your donors to think outside of the box to support your nonprofit. Every dollar helps!
Make every minute a revenue generating minute!
