May 1, 2015 Mug-Bugs & Airplanes & Volunteers…Oh, My!
Each year, my husband and I host an event for a local nonprofit. When I say host, what I really mean is we are involved in each and every detail required to put on this event. Because we are both very passionate about airplanes and helping those who have no voice, our animal friends, it’s a labor of love.
On Saturday, May 2nd, we will hold the 3rd Annual Crawfish Boil and Fly-In at the Northeast Alabama Regional Airport in Gadsden, Alabama. We have identified two organizations, the Humane Society Pet Rescue & Adoption Center and Adopt-A-Pal as the recipients of the funds raised. This is sure to be a fun event with a band, discovery flights, children’s activities and even a costume contest for our fur babies. AND we are cooking up 800 pounds of crawfish!
As I plan the event, I am experiencing every preparation detail and frustration that my nonprofits deal with in conducting their events.
The biggest reminder for me has been to start early, especially when it comes to recruiting volunteers!
With all of the details that have to be accomplished I’m finding that commitments from volunteers do not move as fast as we would all like. People volunteer for several reasons. Some simply want to simply give back. Others participate because they want to do something different than what they do at their workplace – they want to try new things and don’t have a means to do so. When you identify volunteer needs for your event, place key volunteers in strategic areas based on their strengths. This will ensure each area is handled in an efficient manner. Place the remaining volunteers in areas they request to help them reach their personal goals.
If you are looking for something fun to do this weekend, come on out to the Gadsden airport from 11AM until 2PM. Bring your lawn chairs, your kids, your pups and enjoy a beautiful afternoon listening to the Skydogs perform and eating some delicious crawfish!
Make every minute a revenue generating minute!
