April 29, 2016 Mudbugs and Puppy Dogs
My husband, Mike, is a corporate pilot. Six years ago someone dropped a puppy off on the road at the Gadsden airport and she made her way to the FBO. Unbeknownst to Mike and me, our lives were about to change big-time. We named the puppy “Piper” as a nod to the type of airplane that we own. Since the events of that momentous that day we have become very passionate about rescue animals.
In addition to being an animal lover, Mike enjoys cooking crawfish, or, as our Louisiana friends call them, “mudbugs”. Because of these two passions, rescue pups and mudbugs, four years ago we decided we wanted to conduct a fundraiser for the Humane Society Pet Rescue and Adoption Center here in Gadsden. I was serving on their board at the time.
During the 2nd Annual Crawfish Boil, a pup that was up for adoption caught my eye. Mellie, short for Amelia Earhart (yes, I named her in keeping with our airplane “theme”) joined our family that year.
The 4th Annual Crawfish Boil and Fly-in will be held this year on Saturday, May 7th at the Northeast Alabama Regional Airport (KGAD). We’ll be cooking up 600 pounds of crawfish (along with corn and red potatoes) from 11:00AM until 2:00PM. We’ll also have hot dogs for those not into the “bugs”. During the event we’ll have entertainment from the ever-popular band, the Skydogs. There will be airplanes, vendors and a Gift Box Raffle with prizes ranging from $25.00 to $100.00 and a grand prize drawing for a two night stay in a beautiful cabin in Mentone.
Come on out and join us! Bring your lawn chairs and pups and enjoy this fun day, all while helping the fur-babies.
Make every minute a revenue generating minute!
