August 19, 2016 Caterpillars to Butterflies
When I was a young child I had a butterfly farm as a school project. I got to see how a larva grew into a caterpillar and then changed into the most beautiful butterfly. It truly amazed me. I saw the prettiest butterfly fluttering around my yard the other day and remembered that butterfly farm. God’s hand at work.
As a nonprofit embarking on your first fundraising event, you, too, need to start out like a larva with a few volunteers and a few donors and begin to spread your mission. Much like the metamorphosis of the butterfly, it takes time to grow an event before it will be thriving and successful. As the years progress, an increasing number of donors and volunteers become involved and before you know it your event has evolved into one with a reputation as “not to be missed”.
Just as a caterpillar must be nourished so it can grow, so does a successful event. One organization I have worked with for 20 years has metamorphosed into a beautiful butterfly. How did they do it? By listening to new ideas and not being satisfied with the status quo for their event. Each year they get creative with their theme, procure fresh, new live auction items and package their silent auction items with great craftsmanship. They start early in their planning process and continually refine the procedures for their future events.
As you consider your event, be sure you are nurturing it appropriately so it can become the butterfly you dream it can be.
