December 9, 2016 Dressed for Success
I’ve experienced all types of fundraising auction events in my 9 years spent conducting benefit auctions. I’ve seen themed events (Dr. Seuss, anyone?), blue jean-type events, business casual events, cocktail events, black tie/gala events and everything in between. Does the attire your guests wear at your nonprofit’s event impact fundraising? I think so, and here’s why.
Have you ever noticed that when you dress up at work you are more productive? You sound more professional on the phone and you are simply more confident. I know I do. This also plays into fundraising. The dressier the guests are, the more confident they feel and this results directly into more money being raised at your event.
While recently attending the National Auctioneers Association’s Benefit Auction Summit in San Diego, California, attire at events was the subject of one of our discussions. One auctioneer, Erin Ward, made a comment that was most compelling and simply put: “The higher the heels, the more you will raise”.
Guests also like to engage with the theme at your event when that opportunity is there. To encourage participation, I suggest you offer a drawing with a fun prize for everyone who dresses to theme.
You might want to consider “stepping it up” a notch when you begin plans for your next event. People like to dress up and when they do the fundraising increases.
